Illustrator CS and above

If you are using an earlier version of Illustrator and have access to Acrobat Standard or Professional (not Acrobat Reader) version 6 or later, please see the instructions on how to create a PDF file using Acrobat. If you do not have access to Acrobat, please see the instructions for Illustrator 10 or the instructions for Illustrator 8 and 9.

Converting Colors • For CS & CS2: Make sure your ad conforms to Source Interlink Media's Digital Guidelines; specifically, all spot colors must be converted to process. • To do this, open your Illustrator file and choose Select > All, then choose Filters > Colors > Convert to CMYK for color ads. • For black and white ads, choose Filters > Colors > Convert to Grayscale instead. • For CS3: Select Edit > Edit Colors > Convert to CMYK and for black and white ads, select Edit > Edit Colors > Convert to Grayscale.

Save As • Choose File > Save As..., • a Save As dialog box will appear. • Name the file and choose the folder in which you would like the PDF to be saved. • Choose Adobe PDF (pdf) as the format and click Save.
Illustrator CS2 & CS3 • For Illustrator CS2 & CS3, choose [PDF/X-1a:2001] for the Adobe PDF Preset option. • For Illustrator CS, choose [Press] for the Adobe PDF Preset option.
Layout Tab • Highlight Marks and Bleeds along the left side of the dialog box. The options for marks and bleeds will appear on the right side of the dialog box. • In the Marks area, checkmark Trim Marks only. (Note that the Preset at the top has changed to [modified].) • In the Bleed and Slug area, enter in 0.125 for the fields top, bottom, right and left bleeds. (Not necessary for Non-Bleed ads.) • Click Save PDF. • Once completed, be sure to compare the PDF version of the ad with the original version.
